Make Meat Stock
Make meat stock, using our meat stock recipe or another trusted GAPS recipe only. Bone broth should not be consumed while healing. Your stock does not have to be perfect. Use one quart of filtered or spring water per 1 pound of meaty bones1. To lower cost, ingredients can be reduced to just meat and mineral salt. Using chicken leg quarters from the grocery store will be easy and very inexpensive. Do not worry about buying conventional meat if that is what your budget allows, but do always buy organic vegetables.
Try just a tiny sip if it is your first time or if you know you have high histamine issues. Give your body time to tell you how it receives the new food. This is the first of your core foods. It is the food that will heal and seal the gut and is a major “building food“.
…and Fermented Cabbage Juice
Fermented cabbage juice is high in vitamin C and is a powerful probiotic.
- Chop one medium head of cabbage into tiny bits
- Place in large bowl and add 6 T of mineral salt and mix to distribute salt
- Cover with a kitchen towel overnight
- Fill glass jars 1/3 with cabbage and salt
- Fill to shoulders of jar with filtered or spring water
- Lid and ferment for 9 days
If you have never had fermented food before, put a drop in your meat stock added when at a temperature that is cool enough to eat. If you have histamine issues, add to a glass of water. You can begin with a speck by dipping a toothpick or knife tip in the juice and then in the water. Increase slowly until up to a tablespoon. Try a drop on your tongue. Increase slowly until you can have as much as you like. You will drink this 20 minutes before every meal. It can be useful if you experience nausea.
…and Sauerkraut
- Chop cabbage into small bits
- Pack into quart jar, using a wooden spoon or your knuckles to pack in tightly
- Add one tablespoon of mineral salt
- Fill to shoulders of jar with filtered or spring water
- Fill jar to shoulders with filtered
- Lid and ferment for 9-12 days
Supplementum
If you are well beyond this stage in your journey, this week is the week for you to make a recipe with an organ meat you have never tried before! Alternatively, take one hour every day to work on a project that is purely for joy and uses your creativity. Remove all seed oils, sugars, and grains from your kitchen and your diet. This includes any packaged food that contains these ingredients.

Another option for meaty bones is to reach out to hunters, your local Weston A. Price Facebook Group, and processors and farmers to see if you can obtain the carcass after an animal has been processed. ↩︎
