This guide is intended for adults. It should not be used for administering enemas to children.
Enemas are often used to support our bodies by giving our detoxification systems a break. Some people need to do enemas daily for a long time while other never need to do them, though they may still find them to be supportive. You do not have to do enemas if you have daily, medium-brown, and formed-but-still-soft bowel movements. At least knowing how to do them, however, is wonderful for times when you have ingested something you want to move through your system quickly, you don’t feel well, or you want to give your body some extra support.
Your Space
For your first time, it is helpful to release all expectations and instead use this time to just get comfortable with the process and the sensations. Don’t worry about holding in the liquids. Just get used to the experience and congratulate yourself for learning this modality! Make a comfortable spot to lie down in the tub or next to the toilet on the floor. An old pillow and an old towel are perfect for this. Use silicone for the enema bag or stainless steel if you are using an enema bucket. Make sure the kit has a nozzle that is a bit bendable and tapered, or catheter. Do not use a nozzle that is hard plastic or has a bulb on the end. Hang the enema bag/bucket halfway between shower head and the faucet or about 3 feet up from your towel.
For lighting, use beeswax candles. For listening, choose a sound that is soothing. Do not look at your phone, listen to anything modern with lyrics, or listen to podcasts or books. The goal is to stay in a parasympathetic nervous system state.

⚠️ If you are sensitive to coffee or have celiac, you may want to begin with the smallest pinch to see how you react.
Use an alternative retention enema recipe or search online.
The Enema
The key is to have everything you need set up beforehand:
- an old towel and pillow to lie on
- a small hand towel to wipe hands
- a jar for transferring cleansing recipe liquid into the enema bag/bucket
- some coconut oil or animal fat in a small container to use as a lubricant
- the enema kit
- a beeswax candle
Cleansing Enema:
- Have your enema bag/bucket in proper position
- Close the nozzle and pour in 1-1.5 quarts of the cleansing recipe into the enema bag/bucket.
- Open nozzle until you hear all the air bubbles come out of the tube.
- Close again to prevent liquid from coming out.
- Make sure your towel is far enough underneath you so it doesn’t get wet.
- Lie down and breathe through the left nostril only (closing the right manually). Do this for a minute or two. Alternatively, breathe the perfect breath3 for a minute or two to communicate safety to the body.
- Lubricate and insert nozzle and gently open once inserted.
- If using a nozzle: 4-5 inches depth is good.
- If using a catheter: 6-8 inches is good.
- Hold in for up to 2 minutes, while doing the ileum massage, then release.
- Ileum Massage: Start on the left side of your belly and apply gentle pressure as you move your hand down in a straight line (like the number 1), starting from just beneath the rib cage and moving down to the top of your left hip bone.
🚩 If you have built-up fecal matter: Do four cleansing enemas.
🚩 Otherwise: Do three cleansing enemas (or until the water runs clear).
Coffee Enema:
Once you are done with the cleansing enemas, you can move on to the coffee enema. When you pour the coffee into the enema bag/bucket be careful not pour in the grounds that are sitting at the bottom of the pot. You could also strain prior to pouring.
- Open nozzle briefly to clear air from tube.
- Lubricate and insert nozzle or catheter.
- Roll over onto right side.
- Try to hold the coffee in for 15 minutes. You may not be able to hold it in for the full 15 minutes, especially in the beginning, and that is fine.
Utilize deep breathing and deep gratitude to help calmly move through the sensations of the body wanting to release. After the entire procedure is over, insert kefir with a syringe into your anus, take a detox bath, and have a cup of hot tea. It is OK to experience die off reactions from enemas. Just rest and support the body while it releases what it needs to.
The reason you roll over onto the right side is so that the coffee can make it through the portal system into the liver. Taking coffee into the body rectally does not create the jitters as does drinking it, it actually places the body in a parasympathetic nervous system state.
Alternative Enema Additives
These enema additives can be used in place of coffee. Experiment with herbs and teas in enemas instead of taking them orally to see how your body responds. You may want to avoid high-oxalate teas and herbs for enemas.
You can purchase books online (often used) with enema recipes. Monika Holland also has an enema masterclass that can be taken in her membership plan.
